A municipal regulation, an insurance policy, a lease exist in several versions that have to say the same thing. That work comes round every year, on documents that change only at the margins.
The established machine translators are foreign, which rules them out as soon as the document is sensitive. The canton of Ticino settled the question by building its own internal service on a Swiss model, for government documents.
The hard part is not the sentence, which models handle well. It is consistency. A term translated one way last year has to be translated the same way this year, or two versions of one regulation drift apart.

How it works
The glossary makes the difference, not the model.
The model is the same for everyone. What belongs to an organisation is its vocabulary and the translations it has already approved.
Organisational glossary
Required terms are respected, including where a model would prefer a different turn of phrase. Official designations are not paraphrased.
Memory of approved wording
A sentence already translated and approved comes back identical. That is what makes the second year far quicker than the first.

What this software will not do.
Machine translation has crossed a threshold, it has not removed proofreading. On a text that binds anyone, publishing without human review is still a risk taken.
- It does not produce certified or sworn translations.
- It does not rule on the legal weight of a translated version.
- It does not handle Romansh, for lack of enough material to do it honestly.
- It does not replace a translator on a text meant to be authoritative.
Frequent questions
Four languages
How is this better than a well-known machine translator?
On a single sentence it is not. On a body of text that returns every year, the glossary and the memory change the result, and the fact that the document stays in the country changes what you are allowed to put in it.
Is the German produced Swiss German usage?
Yes, in Swiss orthography, without the sharp s. It is a detail an administration notices immediately, and it gives away a tool configured for Germany.
Can it be used on documents that are not public?
That is the main use. A draft, an internal report or correspondence cannot be pasted into a foreign online service.
